On the water

Snorkel gear from the beach club stand, and everything you need to get in the water from the gift shop. The bay is calm and shallow, which makes it forgiving if you have never done any of it before.

Where to actually snorkel

Magens Bay is a swimming beach before it is a snorkelling one. The middle of the bay is sand from end to end, which is what makes the water so clear and so easy to swim in, but it also means there is not much down there to look at.

The rocks along the far left side of the bay hold small fish, and the coral toward the far right, out past Little Magens, is better again. Both are a long swim from the middle of the beach, so go in from that end rather than swimming across.

Before you go in

Lifeguards cover the main swimming area during park hours. Conditions are usually calm, but winter swells do happen and the far ends of the bay are outside the patrolled zone.
