Getting to the beach

Magens Bay sits on the north side of the island, over the ridge from town. It is a twenty minute drive from Charlotte Amalie and the cruise docks, and there are two easy ways to do it.

By taxi

From the cruise docks and town

Open air safari taxis run to Magens Bay from Havensight, Crown Bay and downtown Charlotte Amalie all day. Fares in the territory are set per person rather than per vehicle, and are posted at the taxi stands, so agree the fare with the driver before you set off.

Getting back is the part worth planning. Taxis wait in the lot at Magens Bay, but they thin out late in the afternoon and fill quickly when a ship is due to sail. If you are on a cruise, leave more time than feels necessary.

Sailing that evening?

Give yourself a comfortable margin between leaving the beach and all aboard. The road back over the ridge is slow when it is busy.

Over the ridge

The route climbs out of town past Drake's Seat, which is worth the two minute stop for the view down over the bay before you drive into it. Traffic on the north side road is slow and narrow in places, so allow longer than the distance suggests.

Remember that driving is on the left in the Virgin Islands, in left hand drive cars. There is parking at the beach, and the park charges admission at the gate.
